Tennessee’s 2016 recruiting class grew by one today as Dodge City City Community College wide receiver Jeff George announced that he was officially committed to Butch Jones, Zach Azzanni and the Volunteers.
The commitment comes during George’s second visit to Knoxville in as many weeks and gives the Vols a player with the potential to turn into a very valuable weapon as soon as he sets foot on campus.
It’s no secret that the Vols were looking for help at receiver in the 2016 class, and George’s commitment now gives them four players who could potentially see time at wide receiver once they arrive to campus.
And while Dorian Banks, Corey Henderson, and TaDarryl Marshall are all listed at 6’1 or shorter, Jeff George is a different type of player with his 6’6 frame, extended wingspan, soft hands and athleticism.

The Vols wanted to add a player to the 2016 who could win one-on-one matchups in the red zone, and George is more than capable of developing into that type of player once he enrolls in December. George knows how to use his body to ‘box-out- defenders when making the catch, and isn’t scared to make the difficult catches in traffic or in jump-ball situations. He isn’t as polished as some receivers at this stage in his development, but the opportunity to enroll early and go through spring practice in 2016 will be huge as the staff tries to get him ready to see the field in his first year.
The Vols aren’t likely to be done at the receiver position in the 2016 class, but the addition of George should help trim the list and allow the coaches to focus their efforts on a handful of elite-level prospects heading into the season.
