Even though 5-star defensive tackle commitment Kahlil McKenzie is ineligible this season after transferring high schools, that doesn’t mean he isn’t lifting.
He is. A lot.
The Tennessee commitment released a video on Wednesday of himself working on his bench press and he gets 225 pounds up 29 times. How impressive is that? At the NFL Scouting Combine last spring, he would’ve tied for ninth in bench press reps among all of the NFL-bound defensive linemen. Those players had the benefit of 3-4 years in a collegiate strength program. McKenzie is still in the first semester of his senior year of high school.
Some of you workout junkies will point out that he doesn’t get his arms extended all the way on each one and they all wouldn’t have counted at the NFL Combine. Fair enough. But there’s no denying that McKenzie will be coming to UT with SEC-level upper-body strength.
And hat tip to Scott Cole (@scogco) who pointed us to this video of fellow 2015 defensive line commitment Andrew Butcher getting 23 reps at 225 during his junior season.
