Tennessee football is bringing back its “Smokey Grey” alternate uniforms. The Vols wore grey alternate uniforms in 2013 under Adidas and again in 2015-17 under Nike.

Tennessee announced plans to wear the “Smokey Grey” uniforms for the next four seasons. The Vols will wear the same Nike “Smokey Grey” uniform from 2015-17 during this season before debuting a different “Smokey Grey” alternate uniform in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

By the end of the four year plan, Tennessee will wear four different versions of its “Smokey Grey” football uniforms.

Tennessee is 3-1 in the Nike “Smokey Grey” uniforms, beating Georgia in 2015 and Florida and Nebraska in 2016 before losing to Georgia in 2017.

The “Smokey Grey” uniforms Tennessee’s worn in the past and will wear this year are two different shades of grey with the Smoky Mountains silhouette on the helmet. In its release announcing the uniforms, Tennessee said the “concepts will honor the past, celebrate the present and embrace the future of Tennessee football.”

Tennessee didn’t wear alternate uniforms from 2018-20 under head coach Jeremy Pruitt. The Vols dipped their toe back in the alternate uniform game this season, debuting their “dark mode” uniforms. The uniform set included black pants and jerseys with white helmets.

Tennessee hasn’t announced which games it’ll wear the “Smokey Grey” or “Dark Mode” uniforms in 2022.

Besides they are a hold over from the Lyle Jones era. That’s enough reason to burn them!
