Former Vols Joining Local High School Football Staff

Former Tennessee defensive end Marlon Walls is joining the Powell High School football staff, Jimmy Hyams reported Wednesday afternoon. Powell is also on the cusp of adding former All-SEC linebacker Kevin Simon to its football staff according to the report.

Walls previously spent two-seasons as head coach at Memphis’ St. Benedict School. The former Tennessee defensive lineman resigned from that position in May 2021 and is now joining Powell’s coaching staff as the defensive line coach and associate head coach.

Walls played at Tennessee from 2009 to 2013 where he totaled 57 career tackles and 5.5 career sacks. The Mississippi native’s best college season was his last when he totaled 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss.

Simon hasn’t yet joined the Powell coaching staff but is expected to join as defensive backs coach according to Hyams’ report.

The two-time All-SEC linebacker left his position as Tennessee’s Director of Player development in March to coach linebackers at local Knoxville Catholic High School.

Simon came to Knoxville via California and recorded 88 tackles in his senior season before Washington selected him in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

The 38-year old has coached at a number of places beginning as a graduate assistant at Tennessee in 2007-08 before moving on to scouting roles with the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons.

Powell is one of the area’s top high school football programs, claiming the TSAAA 5A State Championship during the 2021 football season.
