Herring is the No. 1 high school player in the state of Tennessee according to both On3 and 247sports. The defensive end ranks as the nation’s 63rd best player and eighth best edge rusher according to the On3 consensus rankings. The Riverdale High School standout ranks as the No. 76 player in the country and the eighth best edge rusher according to the 247sports composite rankings.
Herring’s older brother โ Elijah โ was one of Josh Heupel’s first commit in the 2022 recruiting class. The elder Herring brother committed on April 14 a year ago and early enrolled on campus in January.
Elijah Herring was a three-star linebacker and has gotten off to a strong start including a pick six in Tennessee’s spring scrimmage.
Tennessee beat out Auburn and Georgia for the top-100 recruit. Herring visited Georgia in March and Auburn for a game last fall, but has been a consistent visitor in Knoxville in the last nine months.
Herring is the second highest ranked player in Tennessee’s recruiting class behind only quarterback Nico Iamaleava. After struggling in the state of Tennessee a year ago, the Vols have already landed five commits from its home state in the 2023 class.
The edge rusher’s commitment moves Tennessee into the top 10 in both the On3 and 247sports team rankings. The Vols are No. 7 on On3 and No. 8 in the 247sports rankings.
