How do AFC South Shakeups Impact the Titans’ Overall Season Odds in 2021-2022?

The Titans had a great regular season in 2021, winning the AFC South tiebreaker from the Indianapolis Colts and finishing with an 11-5 record. Their dominant ground game and tough defense couldn’t get them past the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wildcard round of the playoffs, but they look poised for success again in 2021. Here’s how offseason moves throughout the rest of the AFC South will affect the Titans’ chances to repeat as AFC South Champs and make an even deeper playoff run in 2021-2022.

Key Trades, Acquisitions, and Losses

Here’s a quick summary of who each team in the AFC South has gained and lost this offseason:

Tennessee Titans

Tenessee looks ready to win the division again through a balanced offensive and defensive attack. Their offense has the league’s most dominant rusher in Derrick Henry, a consistent a reliable QB in Ryan Tannehill, and an outstanding playmaker in AJ Brown. They return most of their defensive starters and add speed to their linebacking corps with Bud Dupree. Janoris Jenkins makes up for the losses of Malcolm Butler and Adoree Jackson in the secondary, as well. The Titans are tied with the Colts as favorites to win the AFC South at +105 (BetMGM Tennessee).

Indianapolis Colts

Much like the Titans, Indianapolis has a balanced attack, and are strong on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The loss of veteran playmaker Phillip Rivers may hurt offensive production, but the Colts went out and got Carson Wentz via a trade with the Eagles to try to replace him. Time will tell if Wentz is able to bounce back from a 2020 campaign in which he struggled to make plays consistently. They return many of their starters from one of the best defensive units in the league in 2020. They are tied with the Titans as favorites to win the AFC South in 2021-2022 at +105 (BetMGM Tennessee) and at Indiana sports betting apps.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville was absolutely loaded with picks heading into the 2021 Draft, and they cashed in on Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne in round 1. New Head Coach Urban Meyer has no shortage of offensive weapons, as Lawrence and Etienne are joined by DJ Chark, Levishka Chenault, and Marvin Jones Jr. If Trevor Lawrence turns out to be the generational talent that most analysts think he is, the Jaguars may substantially improve upon their 1-15 record from 2020. We rarely see rookies come in and light the league on fire right away, but Lawrence may be an exception. The Jaguars are 3rd most likely to win the AFC South at +700.

Houston Texans

The Texans struggled in 2020 after letting go of some of their best playmakers, including WR DeAndre Hopkins. Their defense will also likely take a major hit in 2021-2022 with the loss of long-time Texan, superstar, and fan-favorite J.J. Watt. Analysts have struggled to explain some of their off-season moves in recent years, as they have defied conventional wisdom and paid the price for it on the field in terms of wins and losses. QB Deshaun Watson was the only Texan on CBS’ list of the top 100 NFL players this off-season, and many thought he was going to be on the way out via trade. The situation is Houston was difficult last year and doesn’t look to be getting any better anytime soon. The Texans have the worst odds to win the AFC South at +2,700 (Fanduel).
