The Vols have made the top-four for in-state 2022 three-star linebacker Elijah Herring, the Riverdale High School product from Murfreesboro, Tennessee announced on Twitter Christmas morning.
Tennessee joined Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Coastal Carolina in his list of four.
Herring is considered the No. 564 overall player in the country by 247Sports’ composite rankings. He’s ranked as the No. 39 outside linebacker and the No. 23 player in the state of Tennessee. 247 itself ranks Herring as the No. 47 outside linebacker and the No. 22 player in the Volunteer state.

He most recently received an offer from Duke on Dec. 18. Herring now has 10 scholarship offers, five of which are from SEC programs. Along with the Vols; Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt have offered Herring. Arizona, Notre Dame, Penn State and South Carolina have expressed interest.
Kentucky was the first to offer Herring. Tennessee offered him a scholarship two days later in June of last year. The Vols were once interested in him as a safety or outside linebacker, but they are now recruiting him as an inside linebacker.
Herring has a younger brother in the 2023 class who is being recruited by Tennessee as well. Caleb Herring is already ranked a four-star and top-100 prospect by 247Sports as the No. 97 overall player in the country, No. 4 outside linebackers and second-best player in the state of Tennessee for his class.
The Herring brothers are Atlanta natives who moved to the Nashville area while they were in middle school.
Tennessee currently has one player committed in the class of 2022. Three-star defensive end Jimmy Scott out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania committed to the Vols on Aug. 16. The Vols signed one linebacker from the 2021 class during the recent early signing period in four-star Aaron Willis.
