Just a few game into the 2019-20 season, it was announced that Tennessee redshirt sophomore forward Zach Kent would be “stepping away” from UT’s men’s basketball program. Now, it appears he’s found his new basketball home, and it’s closer to his actual home.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Kent has committed to play for Delaware State to continue his basketball future.

The 6-foot-11, 235-pound forward, who is from Delaware, signed with Tennessee in the 2017 class after playing his senior season at Blair Academy in New Jersey. Kent played in two games as a freshman in the 2017-18 season, scoring four points and grabbing two rebounds against Presbyterian and snagging an offensive board against High Point. Kent redshirted that season. Last year, Kent underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his knee in October and sat out the entire season.

This year, Kent appeared in two games, playing four minutes against UNC Asheville and logging six minutes against Murray State, scoring three points and grabbing two rebounds.

In total, Kent played in four games, scoring seven points and totaling five rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Originally, Tennessee’s statement on Kent was that he was “stepping away” from UT’s program, and it wasn’t confirmed until about a month later that Kent was in the NCAA transfer portal and would be continuing his basketball career rather than completely moving on from the sport.

Delaware State competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and is currently 1-14 on the year. The Hornets haven’t had a winning season since the 2011-12 campaign when they finished 15-14. They’re coached by Keith Johnson, who is in his second full year and third year total as head coach after being appointed as interim head coach in the 2017-18 season.
