Flipping recruits from one school to another is hard work. Getting uncommitted prospects to commit to a school is difficult enough, but convincing a player currently committed to a school to flip his pledge to another is even harder. Yet coaches across the country continue to try and flip prospects every cycle, and every cycle sees a handful of recruits change their commitments in the final months before the early signing period and National Signing Day.
Tennessee’s coaches are trying to get a few committed prospects to rethink their commitments and pledge to the Vols instead.
Last recruiting cycle, UT didn’t have a great deal of luck flipping players away from other schools. The Vols missed out on several prospects that way, including Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe, Georgia linebacker Trezman Marshall, and Alabama defensive end Justin Eboigbe among others. But the Vols did have a little success, getting running back Eric Gray to back off his commitment to Michigan before ultimately choosing Tennessee.
In the 2020 recruiting cycle, Tennessee’s coaches are trying to have a little more success with flipping prospects than they did in the last cycle. UT isn’t pursuing as many high profile committed players like they did in the 2019 class, but Tennessee still has a number of flip candidates on their board for this class.
I took a list of the Vols’ most likely flip targets — in my opinion — and divided them into three categories based on how likely it is I think the Vols could land them. There’s the “most probable” group, the “foot in the door” group, and the “long shot” group.
Here’s a look at the prospects Tennessee is working on flipping away from other schools before National Signing Day.
