Tennessee travels to Norman this weekend to face the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners in what most expect to be an uphill battle. Should the Vols somehow get the W, they’d not only shock the general public, but also the odds makers who have pegged UT as a three-touchdown underdog.
Which begs the question: where, exactly, would such a victory rank on the list of great Vol upsets in Tennessee history? Which is what compelled me to compile this list from the modern era, as defined by Johnny Majors through Butch Jones. The title says Top 10, and it is, but there are actually twelve games recounted. I awarded a tie in one spot and an honorable mention in the other because, well, just because.
HUGE shoutout to the man I ALWAYS turn to when I want to vet out such matters, none other than the venerable Vol Colonel who is one of my favorite Twitter followers. Thank you, Colonel. And God bless.
One thing to note: I’m certainly not claiming to be this huge historian or something. It’s quite possible I missed a few. So please chime in with some games of your own in the comments if you’d like.
Now, on to the list. Clocking in at No. 10:
