The NFL is back. Well, kind of.
Week 1 of the preseason has concluded, and several former Vols saw action throughout the league. Here’s a look at how each of the former Vols performed during the first week of NFL preseason action.
Atlanta Falcons
Luke Stocker, TE — After not playing in the Falcons first preseason game – the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio – Stocker played in Atlanta’s 34-27 loss to Miami. He started and played 10 snaps.
Matt Simms, QB — In a fight to make the Falcons 53-man roster, Simms was 8-of-17 for 86 yards in the loss to the Dolphins. He was sacked three times. Simms signed with the Falcons last week following a stint in the Alliance of American Football League.
Baltimore Ravens
Morgan Cox, LS — The Ravens beat the Jaguars 29-0 in their first preseason game.
Buffalo Bills
Jason Croom, TE — Croom has been dealing with a hamstring injury and did not play in the Bills first preseason game – a 24-16 win over the Colts.
Carolina Panthers
Rashaan Gaulden, DB — Gaulden was all over the place in the Panthers 23-13 win over the Bears. The former Vol punched the ball out of Chicago tight end Ian Bunting’s hand, forcing a fumble. Gaulden also recorded a pass deflection on a blitz as he hit Chase Daniel.
Michael Palardy, K — Palardy recorded four punts for an average of 41.0 yards. He had a long of 51 yards and downed one punt inside the 20-yard line.
Chicago Bears
Tyler Bray, QB — Trying to make the Bears’ 53-man roster, Bray was 8-of-17 for 85 yards in the Bears 23-13 loss to the Panthers.
Cordarrelle Patterson, WR — Patterson has been receiving some work at running back in practice, but he did not play in the Bears’ first preseason game.
Cincinnati Bengals
Josh Malone, WR — Malone started and played 28 snaps against the Chiefs on Saturday. He was targeted four times and caught two passes for 23 yards. Malone also returned a kickoff for 31 yards.
Cleveland Browns
Britton Colquitt, P — Colquitt punted twice for an average of 47.5 yards. His longest punt went 50 yards, and he pinned one punt inside the 20-yard line.
Dallas Cowboys
Jason Witten, TE — Witten did not record any stats in the Cowboys’ first preseason game, a 17-9 loss to the 49ers.
Denver Broncos
Ja’Wuan James, OL — In a 22-14 loss to the Seahawks, James started at right tackle for his new team and played 17 snaps. James didn’t play in the Broncos first preseason game – the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
AJ Johnson, LB — In the Broncos’ loss to the Seahawks, Johnson recorded four tackles on 35 defensive snaps and 13 special teams snaps. The week before in the Hall of Fame Game, Johnson recorded five tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a quarterback hit.
Detroit Lions
Justin Coleman, DB — Coleman started and played six snaps for his new team in the Lions’ 31-3 loss to the Patriots. He recorded a tackle.
Jalen Reeves-Maybin, LB — Reeves-Maybin also started for the Lions against the Patriots after picking off Tom Brady earlier in the week in a joint practice. The former Vol made two tackles.
Houston Texas
Zach Fulton, OL — Fulton started for the Texans at right guard against Green Bay and played 28 snaps.
Trevor Daniel, P —Daniel punted once for 38 yards in a 28-26 loss to the Packers.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Ethan Wolf, TE — The Jaguars signed Wolf on Sunday.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kahlil McKenzie, OL — McKenzie started for the Chiefs at right guard in a 38-17 win over the Bengals. He played 28 snaps.
Dustin Colquitt, P — Colquitt recorded two punts for an average of 39.5 yards. He had a long of 47 yards and pinned one of his punts inside the 20-yard line.
Los Angeles Rams
John Kelly, RB — Kelly started for the Rams and carried the ball three times for 10 yards, averaging 3.3 yards per carry. He also had two catches for two yards.
Miami Dolphins
Preston Williams, WR — Williams led the Dolphins in receiving in their first preseason game, a 34-27 win over the Falcons. The former Tennessee transfer hauled in four passes for 97 yards. Williams was targeted five times.
New England Patriots
Jakob Johnson, FB — Johnson played 22 snaps on offense and 21 snaps on special teams in the Patriots 31-3 win over the Lions. He started for New England and caught one pass for 5 yards.
New Orleans Saints
Alvin Kamara, RB — Kamara saw limited action in the Saints first preseason game – a 34-25 loss to the Vikings. He carried the ball four times for 11 yards and caught two passes for 15 yards. All of his touches were on the opening series of the game.
Colton Jumper, LB — Jumper played 19 snaps and did not record a tackle.
Shy Tuttle, DT — According to Pro Football Focus, Tuttle recorded the second-highest grade (77.5) on the Saints of players who recorded at least 15 snaps. He recorded one tackle.
New York Jets
Kyle Phillips, DE — Phillips recorded two tackles and played 22 snaps in the Jets’ 31-22 loss to the Giants.
Matt Darr, P — Darr recorded two punts for an average of 43.5 yards per punts. Both of his punts dropped inside the 20-yard line, and he had a long of 53 yards.
Oakland Raiders
Nathan Peterman, QB — Peterman was impressive in his preseason debut for the Raiders, completing nine of his 12 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 56 yards, 50 of which came on one scamper. His lone touchdown pass went for 3 yards.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Josh Dobbs, QB — Dobbs started for the Steelers on Friday night in a win over Tampa Bay. The former Tennessee quarterback not only impressed with his legs but with his arm as well. Thanks to a 49-yard completion to James Washington and a 22-yard competition to Washington on 3rd-and-21, Dobbs finished 5-of-8 for 85 yards. He also had a rush of 36 yards to put the Steelers in scoring position.
Ramon Foster, OL — As a veteran, Foster didn’t play in Pittsburgh’s first preseason game. He’s penciled in to be the Steelers starting left guard this season.
Cameron Sutton, DB — Sutton also started for the Steelers against the Bucs. He recorded two tackles on 49 snaps and had good coverage on two incompletions.
Daniel McCullers, DT — McCullers was the third former Vol to start for the Steelers on Friday night. He recorded one tackle in 14 snaps.
Philadelphia Eagles
Derek Barnett, DE — Barnett did not play against the Titans in Week 1 of the preseason.
Malik Jackson, DL — In the Eagles’ 27-10 loss to the Titans in Nashville, Jackson started for his new team and played 11 snaps.
San Francisco 49ers
Emmanuel Moseley, DB — Moseley started and played 43 snaps in the 49ers’ 17-9 win over the Cowboys. He recorded three tackles and was called for pass interference once.
Jalen Hurd, WR — The former Tennessee running back turned Baylor wide receiver hauled in two touchdowns in the 49ers’ win. On his first NFL catch, Hurd turned it into a 20-yard touchdown as he barreled into the end zone. He then caught a 4-yard fade in the end zone for a touchdown. Hurd finished the night with three catches for 31 yards and two touchdowns.
Tennessee Titans
LaTroy Lewis, LB — Lewis recorded two tackles in the Titans’ 27-10 win over the Eagles. He also had a nice pass rush.
Alex Ellis, TE — Ellis played 11 snaps in the fourth quarter.
Jordan Williams, DL — Williams had one tackle in 11 snaps. Unfortunately, the Titans cut Williams on Monday morning.
