With the news emerging that Tennessee offensive coordinator Tyson Helton is set to accept the head coaching position at Western Kentucky, many Vol fans wondered how that decision would affect recruiting, specifically with UT’s lone quarterback committed in the 2019 class, Brian Maurer.
Maurer was essentially hand-picked by Helton as the main quarterback the Vols would target in this class, and Maurer and Helton developed a strong relationship ever since Maurer first got an offer (and committed a week later) from the Vols over the summer.

So how does Maurer feel about the change on Tennessee’s staff?
Maurer, who is rated as the No. 460 overall player and No. 17 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class, tweeted out a “best of luck” to Helton after the news first broke, and lamented the fact that he would never get to play for Helton at Tennessee.

Later on, Maurer weighed in on who he would like to see as the Vols’ offensive coordinator next season. He tweeted out “Kingsbury” in reply to someone asking who Vol fans would like to see as Tennessee’s next offensive coordinator. Kliff Kinsbury was just fired as the head coach of Texas Tech but has orchestrated some explosive offenses at Houston, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech.
Maurer would later delete the tweet, however.
But if Tennessee doesn’t hire Kingsbury? Maurer would be fine with Hugh Freeze, the former Ole Miss head coach, as well.

We have a full list of the most likely candidates to fill Tennessee’s offensive coordinator vacancy, and both Kingsbury and Freeze are on our hot board.
As a senior, Maurer enjoyed the best year of his high school career. He set several school and county records for West Port High School, completing 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,572 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions according to MaxPreps. He also ran the ball 80 times for 466 yards and six scores.
Maurer finished his high school career with 7,693 passing yards, 64 passing touchdowns, 35 interceptions, 905 rushing yards, and 14 rushing touchdowns in 29 games.
The three-star quarterback is expected to sign with the Vols during the early signing period that begins on December 19th, and he’s also expected to be an early enrollee for Tennessee.
