Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt confirmed on Monday that redshirt sophomore quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is “day-to-day” heading into the Vols’ season finale against Vanderbilt.
Guarantano was knocked out of Saturday’s 50-17 loss to Missouri early in the contest. He took a big hit on Missouri’s first sack of the game, and he didn’t seem the same after that play. Guarantano stayed in the game for a couple series after that hit, but he was removed after the first quarter. Redshirt senior Keller Chryst was inserted in his place.
Chryst would lead the offense to a couple scoring drives before he ended up throwing an interception right outside the red zone right before halftime that was returned back into Tennessee territory. Missouri would score a touchdown on that offensive possession, and the Tigers would take a 26-10 lead into the half.
The Vols would score on their opening possession of the second half, but that was about it for the offense. Chryst would toss another interception late in the game. He finished the afternoon 7-of-19 for 173 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Guarantano only attempted two passes in the game against Missouri, and both were incomplete.
On the season, Guarantano has started all 11 games for Tennessee and has completed 64.5 percent of his 217 pass attempts for 1,768 yards, 11 touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Tennessee will be looking to avoid a third straight loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday. The Commodores throttled the Vols 42-24 last year to end the Vols’ season with a 0-8 SEC mark. The previous year, Vanderbilt ended Tennessee’s hopes of making it to the Sugar Bowl with a 45-34 victory in Nashville.
Vanderbilt hasn’t beaten Tennessee three times in a row since they won six in a row from 1920 to 1926.
