Late last month, four-star Nashville defensive tackle Brant Lawless was released from his National Letter of Intent with Tennessee in the 2018 signing class. Now he’s reportedly been cleared to enroll at another Power Five program.
According to a report fro 247Sports, Brant Lawless has received clearance to enroll at North Carolina and will be eligible to play immediately for the Tarheels. Lawless took an official visit to UNC just days after receiving his release from Tennessee, and everything became official for his enrollment on Thursday.
Lawless was the No. 256 overall player and No. 7 player in the state of Tennessee in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound tackle from Nashville is the third-highest rated player in North Carolina’s 2018 recruiting class, ranking only behind four-star offensive tackle William Barnes and four-star athlete Dyami Brown.
Lawless committed to Tennessee back in May of 2017 and stayed committed to the Vols even after UT’s coaching change. But he never made it in to UT after signing with the Vols, and he received a release from his LOI on July 23rd. He played for Nashville Christian School.
Lawless was part of a trio of in-state defensive linemen who committed to Tennessee in the 2018 class who were expected to come in and add depth immediately for the Vols. Lawless, Greg Emerson, and D’Andre Litaker were all part of Tennessee’s 2018 class at one point. But only one of those trio ended up officially joining the Vols.
Four-star Greg Emerson enrolled early with Tennessee back in January, and he’s the only one of the trio who is officially a Vol. Litaker, who suffered several injuries in high school, ended up decommitting from Tennessee late in the 2018 cycle and recently signed with UT-Martin.
Lawless won the 2017 Tennessee Mr. Football Award as a defensive lineman in his senior season. He totaled 49 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks during his final year with Nashville Christian School.
