Jeremy Pruitt continues to fill out his staff at Tennessee after being named the Vols’ new head coach on Thursday. And he continues to reel in some impressive names with solid track records.
According to Dan Harralson of Saturday Down South, Pruitt may be adding former Heisman-winning quarterback Chris Weinke to his staff. It’s not specified as of yet what that role would be on his staff, but Weinke had been serving as an offensive analyst for Alabama this season.
Weinke won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback for Florida State in 2000 after he threw for 4,167 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions as a senior. He played briefly in the NFL but never had anywhere close to the same success he had in college.
Once he left the NFL in 2007, he didn’t jump into coaching until 2010 when he joined the prestigious IMG Academy as their head coach. He most famously worked with Cam Newton during his time there during the NFL lockout, spending two hours a day with Newton and working on his quarterbacking ability. He then joined the Rams in the NFL as a quarterbacks coach in 2015 then left after the 2016 season to be an offensive analyst for Alabama this season.
If Weinke does join Pruitt’s staff, he’ll be a part of an already star-studded cast of SEC assistants and coaches with standout track records. Coaches like Kevin Sherrer, Tracy Rocker, Will Friend, and Terry Fair are already on Pruitt’s staff at Tennessee.
