Tennessee’s coaching search has been far from logical. It’s taken more twists and turns than an old country road. And the latest turn has Tennessee battling N.C. State for a coach.

According to Joe Giglio of the News & Observer, Doeren has a potential deal with Tennessee and is mulling over that offer along with an improved deal with N.C. State. Giglio expects an announcement to be made on Thursday.

Doeren has reportedly been in contentious negotiations with the Wolfpack over his contract and wants three more years added to his contract. And since then he and his agent have been attaching his name to job openings in order to gain leverage. According to data compiled by USA Today, Doeren’s current contract with N.C. State is for $2,212,600 annually. His current contract runs through 2020.

Doeren has been a head coach since 2011. He coached Northern Illinois for two seasons, going 23-4 with the Huskies, including a 12-1 season and an Orange Bowl berth in his second and final year there. He then took the N.C. State job in 2013 and has been there since.

The Wolfpack went 3-9 overall and 0-8 in ACC play in Doeren’s first season, but he’s taken them to a bowl game since then. But Doeren has never won more than eight games with N.C. State, and his best season with them came this year when the Wolfpack went 8-4 and 6-2 in conference play, finishing second in the Atlantic division. This year marked the first season under Doeren that N.C. State had a winning record in conference play.

We will have more on this story as it develops.
