There weren’t many highlights from Tennessee’s 67-56 loss to Vanderbilt on Wednesday night, but one UT player did find a place in the history books.
Senior guard Robert Hubbs III became the 48th Vol to reach the 1,000-point milestone on a free throw midway through the second half. Hubbs finished the night with 16 points on 5-of-11 shotting.
Hubbs has led the way as Tennessee’s leading scorer this season, averaging 14.3 points per game. That average ranks 15th overall in the SEC as of Thursday.
Hubbs is the leader on the court, but he’s also the leader off the court.
“I’ve said all year that I think that Robert’s leadership is the best,” Rick Barnes said following Wednesday’s loss. “I’m proud of him from that area.”
Out of high school, Hubbs was rated the nation’s 20th overall prospect and the No. 4 shooting guard in the country by 247Sports. The Newbern, Tenn., native was the school’s highest-ranked recruit since Tobias Harris in 2010 under Bruce Pearl.
The last player to score 1,000 points was current Josh Richardson, now of the Miami Heat Other recent players that achieved that milestone include Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes, and Cameron Tatum.
