The Vols have been searching for help at running back in the 2017 class for months.
They finally got it on Saturday afternoon in the form of 5-11, 205-pound running back Trey Coleman of West Monroe, La., who committed to the Vols during a blast of commitments early Saturday morning that came in conjunction with UT’s Orange Carpet Day – one of the biggest recruiting events of the summer.

Running back is arguably the top position of need for Tennessee in the 2017 class due to the possible departures of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara after the season. Both are in their junior season, but certainly also have potential to leave college early for the NFL. That leaves John Kelly and Carlin Fils-aime as possibly the only two healthy scholarship backs on campus in 2017, meaning the Vols need quality and quantity at running back in the 201y cycle.
Coleman is a speedy back that chose the Vols over Arkansas, Mississippi State, Colorado State and several others. The three-star back will certainly be part of the solution at running back, but make no mistake, the Vols will need more at the position. Cam Akers, who was at Orange Carpet Day as well on Saturday, along with in-state prospects Ty Chandler and Chase Hayden will be names to watch going forward as well.
