Former NFL star Dez Bryant loves the idea of a former Tennessee Volunteer to take over the head coaching role of the Dallas Cowboys next season.

The name that Bryant has his eye on is former Vol and former Cowboy Jason Witten.

“I saw a rumor about Jason Witten for the Dallas Cowboys coach job! I love it!” Bryant said.

Bryant and Witten played together in Dallas for eight seasons from 2010 to 2017. Both players were two of the most effective players at their positions during the 2010s and made a lasting impact on the Cowboys fans in Texas.

With the turmoil that Dallas has had this season and the potential of a coaching overhaul this offseason, Bryant looks to be amplifying the noise toward his former teammate Jason Witten.

In the off-chance that Witten actually did get the Dallas job in replacement of Mike McCarthy this offseason, he would make for the second former Vol in the head coaching ranks of the NFL. Former Tennessee linebacker and NFL vet Jerod Mayo is currently in his first year as the head coach of the New England Patriots.

After retiring from the NFL and leaving the broadcast ranks, Witten settled down in the DFW Metroplex and took over the head coaching job at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, TX, in February 2021.

Witten led an undefeated Liberty Christian to a state football championship in 2023.

Witten’s son, Cooper Witten, is a star prospect in the 2027 class. The Liberty Christian linebacker is ranked as a four-star recruit according to Rivals, On3 Sports, and 247 Sports.

According to On3 Sports, Tennessee is one of the six D1 teams to have offered a scholarship to Witten alongside Oklahoma, TCU, Baylor, Missouri, and Duke. The Sooners lead the prediction, though, with Tennessee coming in last at just 1.2 percent.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t fired Mike McCarthy and doesn’t appear to be keen on doing so during the season, but the job could open up this offseason.

The odds for Jason Witten to take over the Dallas Cowboys this offseason feel extremely low. But one former Cowboy is certainly on board to see his teammate in that position.
