Pittsburgh is hiring Tennessee Deputy Athletic Director Allen Greene as its newest Director of Athletics, ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported on Friday morning.

Greene spent less than a year in Knoxville with White hiring the veteran administrator last December as his No. 2 in the Vols’ athletic department.

Greene brings multiple stints of athletic directing experience to Pittsburgh. The Notre Dame graduate spent 2015-18 as the University of Buffalo Athletic Director and 2018-22 as Auburn’s Athletic Director. While at Auburn, Greene was a part of the chaotic hiring of Bryan Harsin as football coach and was also AD when Bruce Pearl led the Tigers to the Final Four.

After Auburn fired him as Athletic Director, Greene spent one year working at Ole Miss before taking the Tennessee job as Danny White’s number two.

Pitt chancellor Joan Gabel fired its previous Athletic Director Heather Lyke last month after she spent eight years leading the Panthers Athletic Department.

Pittsburgh currently has two veteran head coaches in the two biggest sports. Pat Narduzzi is in his 10th season as the Panthers’ head coach and has had relatively consistent success. The Panthers split matchups on the gridiron with Tennessee, winning in Knoxville in 2021 before falling in Pittsburgh in 2022.

Basketball coach Jeff Capel is entering his seventh season running the Panthers program with more spotty success. Capel has made the NCAA Tournament just once in his tenure, losing in the Round of 32.
