With footballs season back, so are NFL players making fun bets with their teammates over the outcomes of college games. While those bets typically happen between players on the same NFL teams, current New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo got in on the fun this week.
Patriots starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett is a North Carolina State alum and made a bet with the former Tennessee linebacker Mayo over the outcome of the week two matchup between the two schools in Charlotte.
With Tennessee dominating NC State in the non conference matchup, Mayo brought Brissett a Tennessee sweatshirt to wear during his Wednesday press conference. Brissett wore the sweatshirt for the rest of the press conference and also stated that Joe Milton III was in on the bet.

Tennessee annihilated NC State 51-10 in the week two top 25 matchup with the game being every bit as one-sided as the final score indicated. The Vols out gained NC State 460-143 with the Wolfpack crossing mid field only once after the opening drive of the game.

Brissett played at NC State from 2013-15 after transferring from Florida. That means that Brissett was not on the 2012 NC State team that Tennessee defeated in its season opener in Atlanta. The veteran NFL quarterback was 2-0 against Tennessee in his college career, serving as a backup for Florida.
Mayo played at Tennessee from 2004-07 where he was apart of a pair of SEC East Champion teams. After the New England Patriots selected him with the 10th pick in the 2008 draft, Mayo played eight seasons in the NFL before beginning his coaching career.
The former Tennessee standout is in his first season the Patriots head coach. Mayo, Brissett and the Patriots are off to a strong start to the 2024 season, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals on the road in their season opener.
Tennessee football returns to the field this Saturday when they host Kent State at 7:45 p.m. ET at Neyland Stadium. Tom Hart, Jordan Rodgers and Cole Cubelic are on the call for the SEC Network.
