Tennessee and head coach Josh Heupel landed a highly-touted recruit on Saturday with the addition of a wide receiver from the 2025 class.

Four-star wide receiver Travis Smith Jr. is committing to Tennessee over Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn, as he announced on the 11Alive YouTube channel on Saturday night. Smith made his announcement at the Westlake High School football field in front of his friends, family, and peers.

Smith Jr. says that the Tennessee staff was “on his tail” every day since offering him and that relationship made a big impact on his decision to chose the Vols.

Standing at 6-foot-3.5, 199 pounds, Smith is a dynamic two-sport athlete flourishing as an outside wide receiver. Smith has a complete game at the high school level using his length and speed in both deep routes and with more precision near the sideline. The Atlanta, GA, product has a great frame to build around, will put muscle on and the strength and condition program, and could wind up being a playmaker for the Vols down the road.

Smith lands as a four-star recruit according to all four major recruiting networks and comes in as the No. 113 player overall, the No. 16 WR, and the No. 14 player from Georgia according to 247’s Composite Rankings.

Smith Jr. began making his official visits in June as he visited Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee in four consecutive weekends. Heupel and the Vols got the last visit of the trip on June 21.

During his junior season in 2023, Smith hauled in 53 receptions for 843 yards and 11 touchdowns for Westlake High School.

“Prototypical outside receiver build measuring around 6-foot-4, 200 pounds on multiple occasions with a plus wingspan,” 247 recruiting analyst Hudson Standish wrote in an evaluation. “Has proven to be a matchup nightmare on the outside on Friday nights and combine settings against top-tier defensive backs as he can climb the ladder in contested catch scenarios or attack all areas of the field with an expanded route tree. Does not possess an elite top-end gear to separate from quicker defensive backs but has a knack for separating late while tracking the ball in the air.”

More from RTI: Highlights From Tennessee WR Commit Travis Smith Jr.

Smith’s commitment to Tennessee gives the Vols their third and highest-ranked receiver to date in the 2025 class. The Vols also have commitments from four-star Memphis WR Radaraious Jackson and three-star Chattanooga WR Joakim Dodson. Each brings something different in terms of traits and abilities to the table with Smith as the tallest and biggest of the incoming receiver commitments.

Smith is also Tennessee’s fourth commitment from the Peach State so far, all being from North Georgia. Tennessee boasts commitments from Alpharetta cornerback Tyler Redmond, Alpharetta cornerback Dylan Lewis, and Buford running back Justin Baker.

Travis Smith Jr. is Tennessee’s 17th commit in the 2025 class after an influx of commitments in June. Tennessee hauled in six commitments last month alone headlined by four/five-star offensive lineman Douglas Utu. With Smith’s commitment here in mid-July, Tennessee could be poised to start another run before training camp begins in August.
