Three-Star Wisconsin Cornerback Commits To Tennessee Football

Three-star cornerback Tre Poteat committed to Tennessee football over instate Wisconsin and others on Tuesday afternoon.

Poteat ranks as a three-star recruit and the No. 545 player in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings. The Verona, Wisconsin native ranks as the No. 48 cornerback in the country and the No. 4 player in the state of Wisconsin in the 2025 recruiting cycle.

Most recruiting websites view Poteat as a three-star recruit while Rivals is the lone sit that ranks him as a four-star recruit.

Poteat committed to Josh Heupel and his staff shortly after taking an official visit to both Tennessee and Wisconsin. The 6-foot-, 175-pound cornerback has taken three total visits to Tennessee, seeing the Georgia game last November and then unofficially visiting in April.

Tre Poteat is the son of former NFL cornerback Hank Poteat. Hank was a a two-time all conference cornerback at Pittsburgh before the Steelers drafted him in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Tre’s father went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL with the Steelers, Bucs, Patriots, Jets and Browns. He is now the cornerback’s coach at Iowa State after spending two seasons in the same position at Wisconsin.

Poteat becomes Tennessee football’s fifth commit in the last two weeks and its third commit in the last four days as the recruiting calendar begins to heat up. He becomes the Vols’ 15th commit in the 2025 recruiting cycle and the third cornerback commit joining Atlanta three-stars Tyler Redmond and Dylan Lewis.

Tennessee’s 15 commit recruiting class now ranks No. 12 in the country and No. 7 in the SEC according to the 247sports team rankings.
