Texas A&M got the SEC coaching carousel started on Sunday by firing head coach Jimbo Fisher after six seasons leading the Aggies’ program.

Mississippi State followed suit on Monday relieving head coach Zach Arnett of his duties after just one season in Starkville, Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger first reported and the school later confirmed.

The Bulldogs’ named Arnett as the program’s head coach last December after head coach Mike Leach suddenly passed away. Mississippi State originally gave Arnett the interim title when Leach was in the hospital but removed the title and made him their full-time head coach shortly after Leach’s death.

Arnett was Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator under Leach and was largely viewed as one of the best defensive coordinators in the country.

It’s been a disappointing season for the Bulldogs. They returned a number of talented players from last season’s team including veteran quarterback Will Rogers. However, Mississippi State’s offense has faltered all season and so has the team.

The Bulldogs fired Arnett with two games left in the regular season. Mississippi State is currently 4-6 (1-6 SEC) but can still make a bowl game by defeating instate foes Southern Miss and Ole Miss in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Mississippi State’s lone SEC win was a 7-3 victory over Arkansas in October and the Bulldogs fired Arnett just two days after a lopsided 51-10 defeat at Texas A&M.

Arnett didn’t face Tennessee in his lone year atop the Mississippi State program but his predecessor will. The Vols travel to Starkville to face the Bulldogs next fall.

  1. Most 3rd downs were 3rd and long. They over pursue giving the qb lots of room to run when he breaks the pocket. They did same thing at Fla. Their offense struggles from play calling. Mix in some over the middle throws and more down field. Too conservative ; hurts an exciting run game. Same thing in 2nd half at Bama. Take responsibility for these losses coaches. Your team is there.
