Tennessee vs UConn Preview

Tennessee in week 9 handled business in Lexington, defeating the Kentucky Wildcats 33-27. It was an impressive test for the Volunteers. Tennessee has climbed the rankings to No. 19 overall and the Vols look to have repeated success against the Huskies this weekend. Quarterback Joe Milton had arguably his most efficient performance this year with his 18 completions on 21 attempts. Milton also managed to throw for one touchdown and 228 passing yards against Kentucky.

Penalties are still a consistent theme for this talented football team. Tennessee had nine that amounted to 70 yards lost. While the Vols didn’t dominate in time of possession, Milton certainly showed how effective he can be with a short clock.  Tennessee also showed out with the run defense, allowing only 72 yards on the ground. Discipline really seems to be the main weakness, the passing defense is not entirely put together but with Milton proving he can put points on the board, it does appear that it is enough to keep the Vols out front.

The Huskies have a Herculean task in front of themselves in the form of Tennessee. Currently at 1-7 with its only win against Rice, Connecticut has been having a rough time to say the least. UConn has kept its last couple games close, only losing by one score. Quarterback for the Huskies, Ta’Quan Roberson, has been a bit on the inconsistent side.  While showing flashes against Rice and having a 91.7 QBR for that game as well as a 79% completion percentage, Roberson also has games of 10.7 and 29.3 in terms of QBR and thrown for as little as 114 yards in a single game.

In a loss to Boston College last week, the Huskies had only 22 yards of total offense. Connecticut also had 10 first downs and held the ball just under 20 minutes in time of possession. While this football season is “over” for the Huskies, this team still has a chance to shock the Volunteers. Playing in Neyland Stadium is not easy, but Tennessee is kidding itself if it doesn’t expect any fight from UConn. Roberson has had himself some big moments through the air, but the defense for Connecticut can’t afford to be bullied early.

The Tennessee Volunteers almost feel as if they’re in a whole different weight class than the Huskies. Nationally ranked, 6-2 and middle of the pack in a heavily competitive SEC East conference, shows just how well built and staunch this team is. UConn being at 1-7 and a quarterback that has not been consistent and at times has not lived up to the standards, does not look good for the Huskies.
