How Tennessee’s Opponents Fared in Week 9

Each week, Rocky Top Insider will take a look at how all 12 opponents on Tennessee’s 2023 schedule fared.

From UConn to Texas A&M, let’s take a look at how the Vols’ 2023 opponents in the ninth week of the college football season.

Week 1 Opponent: Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia lost by three to Miami on the road in overtime, 29-26. Despite the loss, the Cavaliers are headed in the right direction. After a horrific 1-5 start, the Hoos have beaten then No. 10 North Carolina and taken Miami to overtime.

The Cavaliers are 2-6 on the season with a 1-3 ACC record.

Week 2 Opponent: Austin Peay Governors

The Governors beat North Alabama in a shootout, 49-39. Mike DiLiello threw for a staggering six touchdowns as the Governors improved to 6-2 on the season.

Week 3 Opponent: Florida Gators

Florida came off the bye week and lost to Georgia handedly in Jacksonville, 43-20. The Gators took an early 7-0 lead, but that was the only positive part about their third loss of the season.

Florida is now 5-3 on the year and 3-2 in the SEC.

Week 4 Opponent: UTSA Roadrunners

UTSA’s winning streak continued as the Roadrunners beat East Carolina 41-27 in San Antonio.

The win marked the fourth straight for UTSA who are now 5-3 on the season.

Week 5 Opponent: South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina’s disappointing season continued with a 30-17 loss to Texas A&M on the road. The Gamecocks are now a putrid 2-6 this season with a 1-5 SEC record.

Week 6 Opponent: Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies bounced back coming off the bye with a much-needed two-score win over South Carolina in Aggie land, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Jimbo Fisher’s squad is now 5-3 (3-2 SEC) on the season.

Week 7 Opponent: Alabama Crimson Tide

Week 8 Opponent: Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky lost to Tennessee in Lexington 33-27. The loss marked the third straight for the Wildcats, and after starting 5-0, Kentucky now finds themselves parked fifth in the SEC East at 5-3.

Week 9 Opponent: UConn Huskies

UConn hung with Boston College on the road but ultimately lost 21-14. The loss marked the seventh of the season for the Huskies, who roll into Knoxville on homecoming weekend with a putrid 1-7 record.

Week 10 Opponent: Missouri Tigers

BYE WEEK

Week 11 Opponent: Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia dominated Florida 43-20 in Jacksonville to keep their undefeated season alive. The last time Georgia lost a game is December 4, 2021.

The Dawgs are 8-0 this year with a 5-0 conference record.

Week 12 Opponent: Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt’s losing streak extended to six games with a 33-7 loss to Ole Miss in Oxford. The Commodores sit parked dead last in the SEC East with a 2-7 (0-5 SEC) record.
