How Tennessee’s Opponents Fared in Week 3

Each week, Rocky Top Insider will take a look at how all 12 opponents from Tennessee’s 2023 schedule fared.

From Alabama to Austin Peay, let’s take a look at how the Vols’ 2023 opponents in the third week of the college football season.

Week 1 Opponent: Virginia Cavaliers

After taking a 14-0 lead early against Maryland, Virginia gave up 42 unanswered to lose 42-14 to the Terrapins in College Park. The Cavaliers are now 0-3 to begin year two of the Tony Elliott era.

Week 2 Opponent: Austin Peay Governors

Austin Peay got in the win column for the first time this season with a 63-3 drubbing of ETSU in Clarksville. The Governors are now 1-2.

Week 3 Opponent: Florida Gators

Florida upset Tennessee in The Swamp, 29-16, to extend their home winning streak to 10 games over the Vols. Florida is now 2-1 on the season and came in at No. 25 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll.

Week 4 Opponent: UTSA Roadrunners

Without starting quarterback Frank Harris, UTSA lost to Army last Friday night, 37-29. The Roadrunners are not off to a good start this season, as the loss dropped them to 1-2.

UTSA will face Tennessee in Neyland Stadium this Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

Week 5 Opponent: South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina dominated top-ranked Georgia in the first half in Athens, taking a 14-3 lead into halftime. But the Bulldogs were able to mount a comeback and outscore the Gamecocks 21-0 in the second half to win 24-14.

The loss drops South Carolina to 1-2.

Week 6 Opponent: Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M got back in the win column with a 47-3 win over Louisiana Monroe. The Aggies are now 2-1.

Week 7 Opponent: Alabama Crimson Tide

It was ugly, but Alabama beat Alex Golesh’s USF Bulls 17-3 in Tampa. The win was ore discouraging than encouraging for the Tide, though. Alabama is now 2-1 on the season.

Week 8 Opponent: Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky improved to 3-0 on the season with a 35-3 win over Akron in Lexington.

Week 9 Opponent: UConn Huskies

UConn’s disappointing start to year two of the Jim Mora era continued with a 21-17 loss to FIU. After making a bowl game last year, the Huskies are now 0-3 against three unranked teams.

Week 10 Opponent: Missouri Tigers

Missouri picked up one of the biggest wins of the Eliah Drinkwitz era last Saturday as they knocked off reigning Big 12 champions Kansas State, 30-27. Missouri won the game on a 61-yard, game-winning field goal by Harrison Mevis, the longest made field goal in SEC history.

Missouri is now 3-0.

Week 11 Opponent: Georgia Bulldogs

As mentioned earlier, Georigia overcame a 14-3 halftime deficit to handle South Carolina, 24-14, in Athens. Georgia is now 3-0 on the season.

Week 12 Opponent: Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt fell to UNLV Las Vegas, 40-37. The bad loss drops the Commodores to 2-2 on the season with SEC play beginning next week.
