Former Tennessee quarterback and NFL journeyman Josh Dobbs looks to be one step closer to beginning the 2023 NFL season as the Arizona Cardinals’ starting quarterback this September.
The Cardinals traded with the Cleveland Browns for Dobbs last Thursday. Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick were sent to Arizona in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick.
According to ESPN on Monday, Arizona made the move to keep quarterback Kyler Murray on the physically unable to perform list to start the season while also cutting backup quarterback Colt McCoy. That lines up well for Dobbs’ chances to start the season despite only getting there on Thursday.
Prior to Arizona’s moves on Monday, Dobbs was traded into a competition with veteran backup quarterback Colt McCoy and rookie quarterback Clayton Tune (5th Round, University of Houston). With now only a rookie quarterback standing between him and the starting position, though, it looks like Dobbs could very much wind up the Cardinals’ starter for the first game of the season against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Dobbs also has a connection with Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as the two spent half of a season together in Cleveland when Dobbs was a backup quarterback and Petzing was the Browns’ quarterbacks coach during the 2022 season.
Over the span of his six-year NFL career, Dobbs has played in a total of eight games with two starts, both of which came for the Tennessee Titans at the end of the 2022 regular season. The former Tennessee Volunteer has completed 50 of his 85 passes for a completion percentage of 58.8 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Cardinals look to be going into the season opener without publically naming a starting quarterback as a competitive advantage with the uncertainty.
