VFL and Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh Dobbs is reportedly being traded to the Arizona Cardinals according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Pelissero’s report states that the Browns are sending Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick for a 2024 fifth-round pick from Arizona.
The move comes in the immediate aftermath of Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski naming Dobbs the Browns’ backup quarterback on Thursday afternoon.
Arizona starting quarterback Kyler Murray is still recovering from a torn ACL, meaning that Dobbs is in a solid position to potentially be the Cardinals’ Week 1 starter if he can beat out veteran Colt McCoy and rookie Clayton Tune. Additionally, Dobbs will reunite with Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing who was in Cleveland with him before.

Dobbs’ journeyman career will continue on with his fifth different team.
After a noteworthy college career at Tennessee from 2013-2016, Dobbs was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pittsburgh traded Dobbs during the third year of his four-year contract and sent the former Vol to Jacksonville, who waived him almost exactly one year after the trade.
Following Jacksonville, Dobbs was quickly picked back up by Pittsburgh during the 2020 season but was placed on injury reserve during August of 2021. Dobbs would eventually go on to sign with the Browns in April 2022 but was cut from the team following the end of Deshaun Watson’s suspension.
The Tennessee Titans picked up Dobbs 16 days later and started him for the Titans’ Week 17 game against Dallas. While Dobbs and the Titans did go on to lose to Dallas, 27-13, the former Vol completed 20-of-39 passes for 232 and found his first career touchdown pass. Dobbs would start the Titans’ Week 18 make-or-break game for the playoffs but fell to the Jaguars by a score of 20-16.
Dobbs returned to Cleveland this offseason on a one-year contract and was named the backup to Deshaun Watson on Thursday but was then immediately traded to the Arizona Cardinals, along with a 2024 seventh-round pick, for the Cardinals’ 2024 fifth-round pick.
