2023 Women’s World Cup Preview
The U.S. owns the head-to-head matchup with the Netherlands 8-2, which includes winning the World Cup Final in 2019. Although the wins have been one-sided, the Netherlands always presents a tough challenge. However, the Netherlands has a significant loss to overcome due to an ACL injury their all-time leading scorer Vivianne Miedema suffered in December. Miedema scored two goals the last time she faced the USWNT forcing the Americans to win on penalty kicks during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Without Miedema on the field, the Netherlands will have to rely more on current leading scorer Lieke Martens. As good as the former European Player of the Year is, she didn’t score against the U.S. in her last two attempts. Additionally, the USWNT’s starting goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher recently became the first starting goalkeeper to have fewer than 10 touches (9) in a Women’s World Cup game since the start of the 2011 tournament.
Although it came against Vietnam, that’s an impressive accomplishment that signals the U.S.’ defense is functioning optimally, which bodes well for its chances of avoiding an upset. In 2019, with 46% of the possession, the Netherlands generated five shots, and that isn’t likely to improve significantly with Miedema injured and the U.S. clicking defensively.
