The Tennessee Volunteers dropped a new hype video on May 25 to celebrate the 100-day countdown to the start of the 2023 Tennessee football season.
Now, including Monday, there are 90 days until the Tennessee football season. And while 90 isn’t as commemorative as 100, the Vols still began the week with a new hype video all about the starting quarterback.
After spending two years in Knoxville, Joe Milton will again enter the season as Josh Heupel’s starting quarterback. The former Michigan transfer was Tennessee’s starter for the 2021 season but was injured during the second game of the season, paving the way for Hendon Hooker to take the reigns.
Milton took over Tennessee’s offense for the final two games of the 2022 season following Hooker’s ACL injury. In the first game, a rainy night contest against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Milton completed 11 of 21 passes for 147 yards and one touchdown. Milton performed well in the rain but wasn’t asked to do too much as Tennessee cruised to a 56-0 victory in the Music City.
The Orange Bowl, though, instilled confidence that Milton had improved enough since his first go-around in 2021 and could lead Tennessee in 2023. Without Jalin Hyatt or Cedric Tillman, Milton led Tennessee to a 31-14 victory over No. 7 Clemson in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Milton looked impressive and connected with wide receivers Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, and Ramel Keyton – a trio that Tennessee expects (and needs) to produce big numbers this season. The 6-foot-5 senior threw 19-of-28 for 251 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
All in all, Milton finished the 2022 season 53-of-82 for 971 yards with a 64.6 completion percentage, 10 touchdowns, and no interceptions.
