Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello met with the media following the Vols’ 7-0 midweek victory over Western Carolina to discuss the win and more.

The Vols’ win serves as a bounce-back win for Tennessee after getting swept by Missouri to open SEC play.

Vitello opted to go with a vastly different lineup in the midweek contest, giving Jake Kendro and Ethan Payne first career starts, Austen Jaslove his first start at shortstop in nearly a month and more.

“Just kind of an instinct or a feel,” Vitello said on why he went with a different lineup. “We even had one change late, just due to some circumstances, and wouldn’t you know it, Christian Scott was the late swap out. That’s kind of how it works sometimes. You like to see guys take advantage of their opportunities…[these] guys can say they have experience now.”

Vitello also shared he didn’t have much of a message to the team after getting swept by the Tigers on Sunday.

“We didn’t have one. We got on the bus and we got out of there,” Vitello said.

not enough action had taken place. Everybody knew that. “It was time to get out, get back here and get back to work, and I think a lot of guys did that yesterday on what was an off-day. I think their preparation paid off, because this was a clean game against a good team, and it involved a lot of guys.”
