Tennessee will look to get back to .500 when taking on Alabama A&M on Tuesday, as the Vols went 1-2 to begin the season in Phoenix in the MLB Desert Invitational.
The Big Orange suffered their first loss of the season in the 2023 opener against Arizona on Friday, 3-1. Tennessee’s bats were cold all night long, and despite solid pitching performances from Chase Dollander and Seth Halvorsen, the Vols couldn’t find a rhythm at the plate.
Tony Vitello’s squad played better on Saturday against Grand Canyon but ultimately short against the Lopes to lose their second consecutive game. Chase Burns performed well starting on the mound, but defensive mistakes and aggressive base-running got Tennessee in trouble too many times.
The Vols had their best performance of the weekend on Sunday, when Tennessee shutout UC-San Diego, 7-0, in Mesa, Arizona to end the weekend on a high note.
First pitch between third-ranked Tennessee and Alabama A&M on Tuesday in Knoxville is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
