The Dallas Cowboys made a splash move by acquiring backup quarterback Joe Milton III from the New England Patriots on Thursday morning. The Patriots will send Milton and a 7th-round pick to Dallas in exchange for a 5th-round pick.
The former Tennessee signal caller spent one year with New England after being drafted out of Knoxville in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
During his lone appearance in the Patriots’ regular-season finale last year, Milton threw for 241 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-29 passing with a rushing touchdown in a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills.
With the components of the Cowboys and a quarterback trade at play, users on social media were sure to have some big reactions to the backup acquisition from Dallas on Thursday.

The likelihood of Joe Milton being good is pretty low.
But at $3.5M over the next three years and it only cost a Day 3 pick swap? Sign me up.

Trading for Joe Milton is the PERFECT kind of way to address your backup quarterback situation. Well done on the Cowboys.
Given that Milton still has 3 years of team control with his contract… THIS is exactly why this trade is brilliant (in terms of context) and the Trey Lance…

Having a boring backup is brutal.
They’re a backup for a reason (not very good) and boring football is the worst.
If my QB is hurt at least make it fun. Joe Milton is fun and showed signs of his special traits in limited playing time last year.
All for it.

So if Joe Milton is a 5th and a 7th what is the Market for Will Levis? https://t.co/AxCfgvvFrv

This is a fantastic trade, IMO. Getting Milton’s upside AND a 7th for one of a few 5th round picks is great value. https://t.co/UKOe2YF9a2

Should’ve just kept Milton if that was the best offer

The Pats needed to trade Joe Milton because for the next 10 years he was a walking billboard for how f-ing stupid the Krafts were last season.

Joe Milton: 6’5 246 lbs. Ran a 4.56 40 and throws lasers. His arm strength is ridiculous. He can throw 70+ yards (not that you need that often).
For a 5 plus getting a pick in return?

Joe Milton> Quinn Ewers, Dillon Gabriel, Kyle McCord or any other 5th round option you would’ve drafted.
Dallas can use all there picks on needs and still trade up or back without having to force a Qb in the draft.

New #Cowboys QB Joe Milton III tells me: “My family grew up a Cowboys fan. My mom always had a Cowboys shirt on. She always talked about them. Living in Texas has been a longtime dream of mine. And now I’m with them. I’m ready to work.” https://t.co/kNDFPA4yem pic.twitter.com/XuLmR3KWgZ

“The #Patriots had a better offer for Milton but chose to send him where he wanted out of respect for him, per source.”

Milton has a cannon for an arm. Probably more upside than some of the other options you’d be considering late day 3 in this years class

Don’t want to sound any alarms, but Joe Milton was PFF’s highest-graded QB last season.

Joe Milton has great size/big potential – had a nice reg-season finale for the Pats vs mostly Buff backups – but college career at Mich/Tenn was roller-coaster ride of great and shaky. Hence: 5th round. Doubt he’ll ever be Cooper Rush. But what backup is, except Baltimore’s?
