Prep point guard Troy Henderson committed to Tennessee basketball on Tuesday afternoon shortly after wrapping up a visit with the Vols.
A late name to emerge and a late addition to Tennessee’s 2025 recruiting class, Henderson was committed to Fordham until the school fired head coach Keith Urgo last week. Tennessee, who missed out on point guard target Chance Mallory last week, quickly contacted Henderson and lined up the visit.
Henderson arrived at Tennessee on Sunday night, visited all day Monday when the Vols’ offered him a scholarship and then committed a day later.
A 6-foot-1, 180-pound point guard, Henderson is unranked by the recruiting sites. Henderson didn’t have any power five offers during the first go-around in his recruitment but did boast offers from a number of high-level mid-majors including Chattanooga, High Point, Mount Saint Mary’s and College of Charleston.
After opening his recruitment back up last week, Seton Hall, VCU, Loyola Chicago and Duquesne all reached out to Henderson.
Tennessee was aware of and liked Henderson back in the summer. Rick Barnes’ staff had watched Henderson frequently over the summer because he was the point guard on five-star Nate Ament’s AAU team.
Henderson is a traditional pass first point guard who also shoots the ball well. His size and athleticism aren’t overwhelming but his consistent production and feel for the game impressed Tennessee’s coaching staff over the summer.

Vol Hoops: ‘A Point Guard’s Dream’: Troy Henderson Discusses His Commitment To Tennessee Basketball
The Vols view Henderson as a strong multi-year player that can continue and sustain Tennessee’s culture while they continue to supplement the roster in the transfer portal every offseason.
With Mallory re-committing to Virginia last week, Tennessee remaining in the market for a prep point guard to pair with a transfer portal point guard entering next season. With Henderon looking to find a new home as the portal heats up, the match worked well for both sides.
Henderson is Tennessee basketball’s third commit in its 2025 recruiting class, joining four-star wing Amari Evans and four-star center DeWayne Brown. The Vols now have six scholarships to work with as the fill out their 2025-26 roster.
The Vols are in the top group for the five-star Ament but Tennessee is not a serious player there with Duke and Louisville being the top candidates. Tennessee is a serious player and continues to recruit five-star shooting guards Brayden Burries and Matthew Able.
Barnes and his staff will do most of its work filling out their roster in the transfer portal as they continue to recruit Burries and Able. Tennessee has to replace for starters from its Sweet 16 team and six rotational players. They’ll add a good bit of immediate help in the portal over the next two months.
