Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel is reuniting with a former teammate from his championship days at Oklahoma.
According to a report from Austin Price of VolQuest and confirmed to RTI by a Tennessee spokesperson on Tuesday afternoon, Tennessee is bringing Seth Littrell onto the offensive coaching staff. Littrell previously served as an offensive analyst with Oklahoma in 2023 before being promoted to the Sooners’ offensive coordinator and quarterback’s coach in 2024.
Littrell took over as the Sooners’ OC for their first season with the SEC but it didn’t last too long. Littrell was let go in mid-October with Oklahoma desperately looking for a spark and a quick fix to a underwhelming offense through seven games.
Prior to his time in Norman, Littrell picked up head coaching experience at the North Texas football program from 2016 to 2022. Littrell led the Mean Green to back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2017 and 2018 after taking over a program that went just 1-11 in 2015.
Littrell played fullback alongside quarterback Josh Heupel at Oklahoma in 1999 and 2000 before both players quickly moved into coaching. Littrell spent time with Kansas, Texas Tech, Arizona, Indiana, and North Carolina before getting the UNT job, while Heupel was with Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah State, Missouri, and UCF before his time with Tennessee.

While his final stint in Norman didn’t go the way he wanted, Littrell’s success as the play-caller at North Texas makes him an exciting addition to the Vols’ offensive coaching staff. Littrell is also the second Oklahoma-related figure to join the Vols’ staff this offseason.
On Jan. 2, VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs reported that former Oklahoma quarterback and Heupel pupil Landry Jones would be joining the Tennessee staff as an analyst. Jones and Littrell’s additions help Tennessee replace offensive mind McKenzie Milton after he left to be an assistant coach at Central Florida this offseason.
With Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava returning for his second season as the Vols’ starting quarterback, there’s plenty of opportunity for Littrell to find success with the Tennessee offense as the Vols look to get back to the playoffs for a second straight season. Littrell will work with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel, offensive coordinator Joey Halzle, and the other assistants to get the Vols’ offense moving efficiently this offseason.
