It’s Top 10 Time in Tennessee!

Tennessee finished the season with a 10-3 record, which was good for the second 10-win season in Josh Heupel’s first four years on Rocky Top. The Volunteers also earned a berth in the College Football Playoffs for the first time in program history and took part in a first-round playoff matchup at Ohio State, the eventual National Champions.

Tennessee burst out of the gate with a splattering victory over NC State in just the second week of the season and then went to Oklahoma and picked up a Top 15 road win in an incredibly emotionally charged game for Heupel. While Tennessee dropped an unexpected game to SEC foe Arkansas to start October, the Vols bounced back by beating Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, and Mississippi State in their next four games.

Tennessee fell at Georgia in mid-November but closed the season with two straight victories including a strong showing in Nashville against Vanderbilt.

In his first season as the Vols’ starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava threw for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns, and five interceptions on 63.8% passing. Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson set two all-time program records last fall with 1,491 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns.

Wide receiver Dont’e Thornton led Tennessee in receiving yards (661) and receiving touchdowns (6) while linebacker Arion Carter led the defense with 68 total tackles. Safety Will Brooks and cornerback Jermod McCoy both had a team-high four interceptions while James Pearce Jr. led the team with 7.5 sacks.
