Auburn Star Johni Broome A Game Time Against Tennessee

Auburn basketball’s Johni Broome is a game time decision against Tennessee in Saturday’s top 10 tilt on the Plains according to the SEC availability report.

Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman reported early on Saturday that Broome was likely to play.

The Tigers listed Broome as questionable ahead of the matchup as he did more-and-more work in practice as the week progressed.

Broome is one of the nation’s top players and enter’s the Tennessee game averaging 17.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game this season. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound power forward is shooting 55% from thee field and 29% from the three-point line to this point in the season.

KenPom ranks Broome second in its National Player of the Year rankings behind only Duke star Cooper Flagg.

The fifth-year senior suffered an ankle injury 14 days ago in Auburn’s narrow win at South Carolina. He missed the Tigers’ last two games but used Auburn’s midweek open date to rest up and become available against Tennessee.

Auburn hardly missed a beat without Broome, defeating Mississippi State by 22 points at home and surviving a two-point scare on the road at Georgia.

The Tigers enter Saturday night’s marquee showdown occupying the top-spot in the AP Poll with a 17-1 (5-0 SEC) record. Auburn has wins over Houston, Iowa State, North Carolina and Purdue with its lone loss coming at Duke.

Tennessee enters the matchup 17-2 (4-2 SEC) with a pair of road losses at Florida and at Vanderbilt. The Vols enter the top 10 tilt with a 3-2 record on the road and a 6-2 record away from home this season.

In three career games against Tennessee, Broome has totaled 51 points and 25 rebounds. The Vols are 2-1 in games against Broome and the Tigers. Broome’s best game came last year in Knoxville when he totaled 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a losing effort.

Tipoff between Tennessee and Auburn is at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night at Neville Arena. Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas and Jess Sims are on the call for ESPN.
