Tennessee’s pursuit of four-star linebacker Rodney Colton Jr. is starting to ramp up.

The class of 2026 prospect originally committed to Shane Beamer’s South Carolina program in April 2024 but stayed active with other programs this past fall.

On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett reported on Tuesday night that Colton had de-committed from South Carolina.

Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman reported on Tuesday night that Colton is set to visit Tennessee this weekend after reopening his recruitment.

According to 247’s recruiting timeline, Colton took three visits to Tennessee games this past fall. Colton took unofficial visits on back-to-back weekends for the Florida and Alabama games in October and then had an unofficial visit for the Vols’ game against Kentucky in November.

247 Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Loy logged a prediction for Colton to flip from South Carolina to Tennessee after his visit for the Alabama game and before the Kentucky game.

With another visit coming up this weekend, Tennessee looks to be in contention to land Colton’s services on the recruiting trail.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound prospect is currently ranked as the No. 161 overall player, the No. 11 linebacker, and the No. 21 player from the state of Georgia according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings. The Newnan High School product has racked up more than a dozen scholarship offers including from programs such as Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee.

Tennessee has one linebacker commit in the 2026 class with three-star Braylon Outlaw but the Vols did well at the position in the 2025 class. Tennessee signed four talented linebackers in the 2025 cycle with four-star Christian Gass, four-star Jadon Perlotte, four-star Jaedon Harmon, and three-star Brenden Anes.

The Vols are also targeting another talented linebacker out of the high school scene for the 2026 class. On3 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong logged a prediction for Tennessee to land four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse (Marietta, GA) on Wednesday as the Vols continue to search the landscape for talent.

Colton’s decommitment from South Carolina could provide Tennessee with good news at some point in the 2026 recruiting class, but we’ll just have to wait and see how everything plays out down the road. Stay tuned to Rocky Top Insider for more.
