The internet has burst with speculation about a potential hilarious story involving former Tennessee lineman Byron Young and the NFL Draft in the last few days.

According to a theory from Qiant “Your Boy Q” Myers on ESPN Radio, the Las Vegas Raiders may have potentially drafted the wrong Byron Young during the 2023 NFL Draft.

To understand the theory, you first must understand the situation from the 2023 draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders selected Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young with the 70th overall pick in the draft.

Seven picks later, the Los Angeles Rams selected Tennessee defensive lineman/EDGE rusher Byron Young with the 77th overall pick.

Same name, same conference, similar positions… Could this have been a mix-up?

“This is just me, I don’t know this for a fact, but I definitely believe they selected the wrong one,” Q said on the radio program.

Q went on to reiterate that he is just speculating on the matter but the theory still makes sense as the trajectory of both Young’s careers have gone in drastically different directions as third-round draft picks.

The former Volunteer has played in 34 games for the Rams over the past two seasons, recording 61 total tackles in 2023 and 62 tackles to this point in the 2024 season. Young’s numbers have also been consistent in his first two years with eight sacks in 2023 and 7.5 sacks in 2024.

Young, the former Vol, has produced two nice seasons with the LA Rams to start his career and looks to just be getting the wheels in motion in the NFL.

The other Byron Young, though? The former Alabama defensive lineman drafted in the third round?

He didn’t even make it to his sophomore season with Vegas.

After playing just six games as a rookie in 2023, the Raiders went ahead and cut Young during preseason 53-man roster adjustments. Young totaled just four tackles with the Raiders after being drafted in the third round in 2023. The Alabama Young is now with the Philadelphia Eagles organization but doesn’t appear to play.

It feels like a bit of a hard-to-believe story, but this is the wild world of sports, after all. Perhaps the Raiders truly did call the wrong Byron Young and let the one they wanted, the former Vol, stick around for just seven more picks before the LA Rams came running in to take their guy.

“When the Raiders drafted Byron Young the DT, it was one of the most shocking picks I had witnessed because I had a (undrafted free agent) grade on him and we took him in round 3,” Hula Bowl scout Sanjit T. posted to X. “His college tape was really really bad. Tbh I’m now convinced they took the wrong Byron Young.”

Former Tennessee lineman Byron Young did have some fun with the whole situation, though.

“In all seriousness do I look 292 (pounds)?” Young posted to X on Friday.

Weirdly enough, Byron Young’s Rams will take on Byron Young’s Eagles in the 2025 NFL Playoffs on Sunday afternoon in Philly. The Alabama Young has been ruled out for the game.
