Both Tennessee and Texas are desperate for a victory on Saturday evening. The Vols are coming off a 30-point loss at Florida earlier this week. Top-ranked Tennessee is looking to bounce back from its first loss of the year while a loss would prove detrimental to its SEC Regular-Season Championship hopes.
Texas is 0-2 in SEC play after falling at home to No. 2 Auburn, 87-82, earlier this week in Austin. The Longhorns have two more challenging games next week when they play at Oklahoma and then at Florida. Rodney Terry’s squad needs a win during the tough stretch for its NCAA Tournament hopes.
This is the fourth straight year that Tennessee and Texas have faced off on the hardwood. Texas won the first matchup 52-51 in Austin in 2022 before Tennessee responded with victories each of the last two years. The Vols beat Texas 82-71 in Knoxville in 2023 before knocking off the Longhorns 62-58 in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Tenth-year Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes is returning to Texas for the second time in his Volunteer tenure. Barnes was the Longhorns’ head coach for 17 seasons where he led Texas to the 2003 Final Four.
