Tennessee landed a big-time commitment out of the transfer portal on Tuesday with former Alabama wide receiver Amari Jefferson.
The Chattanooga native committed to Nick Saban’s Alabama program as a four-star prospect in the 2024 class but didn’t play during his true freshman season as he dealt with a hip injury. Jefferson will have four years of eligibility moving forward.
Jefferson is heading closer to home, now. The Baylor School product entered the transfer portal on Jan. 2 after the Tide’s loss to Michigan on New Year’s Eve and committed to Tennessee just five days later.
With Jefferson off the field as a freshman, we still don’t have a great look at how he stacks up against collegiate competition – but we have some good ideas.
“Amari just came in this summer and just extremely talented, highly touted,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said of Jefferson during SEC Media Days in July. “Just versatile. You see with the other sports and things that we can do.”
DeBoer mentions a multi-sport skillset for Jefferson, who was once a commit to Tony Vitello’s Tennessee baseball program before choosing to play football at Alabama. It’s unclear if Jefferson will crossover into Tennessee baseball while in Knoxville, but Knox News’ Mike Wilson did report that there is “mutual interest” between the two parties on Tuesday night.
