Kentucky quarterback Brock Vandagriff is retiring from football after spending just one year as the Wildcats’ starting signal caller, the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Jon Hale first reported on Sunday.

Vandagriff completed 57% of his passes for 1,593 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his lone season as a starting quarterback. The Wildcats struggled badly in 2024, posting a 4-8 (1-7 SEC) record and failing to make a bowl game for the first time since 2015.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound quarterback spent the first three years of his college career as backup at Georgia where he combined to throw for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Vandagriff still had one year of eligibility remaining but elected to hang up his cleats instead.

Former Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt was Kentucky’s backup quarterback in 2024 and played a good portion of the second half of the Wildcats’ loss at Tennessee. But Wimsatt entered the transfer portal earlier this month after just one year in Lexington.

Kentucky landed one quarterback in the transfer portal earlier this month in Incarnate Word signal caller Zach Calzada. A Buford, Georgia native, Calzada spent the first two years of his college carer at Texas A&M before transferring to FCS Incarnate Word.

In 2024, Calzada completed 66% of his passes for 3,744 yards, 35 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was also a weapon with his legs for the Cardinals as he rushed for 332 yards and five touchdowns.

Tennessee football travels to Lexington to face Kentucky on Oct. 25 next season. The matchup is a week after Tennessee faces Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a week before they host Oklahoma at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
