As a freshman with Tennessee in 2022, Herring played a reserve linebacker and special teams role but did record 11 total tackles in 13 games.

Herring enters the portal for a second time in his career on Thursday, racking up 151 total tackles, six sacks, and two interceptions in his three-year career.

Herring was a three-star prospect in the class of 2022 while playing for Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, TN.

Elijah’s younger brother Caleb Herring is a sophomore EDGE rusher with the Tennessee football program. Caleb was the No. 1 prospect in the state of Tennessee in the 2023 class and is nearing the end of his second season in Knoxville. As a freshman, Caleb Herring recorded three tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble during his freshman campaign in 2023. Caleb Herring didn’t record any sacks but doubled his tackling output as a sophomore in a reserve role in the Vols’ deep LEO room.
