Three-star defensive back Timothy Merritt flipped his commitment from Miami to Tennessee football on the first day of the early signing period, On3’s Hayes Fawcett first reported.
A Birmingham native, Merritt committed to Miami back in June but Tennessee hosted him on an official visit shortly afterward and kept the pressure on before landing him on Wednesday.
Merritt ranks as a three-star recruit and the No. 515 player nationally according to the 247sports composite rankings. He also ranks as the No. 22 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 44 cornerback nationally in the 2025 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect is very versatile in the defensive backfield. While 247sports ranks him as a cornerback, Merritt can play both safety and cornerback. Versatility is something that Tennessee covets in its secondary as Willie Martinez has constantly cross trained defenders to be able to play multiple spots.

Merritt plays his prep football at Parker High School where he’s helped lead the Thundering Herd to a 13-1 record and a birth in the 6A Alabama State Championship game against Saraland High School.
Flipping Merritt is important for Tennessee as four-star safety Lagonza Hayward de-committed from Tennessee on Sunday afternoon and it’s uncertain whether four-star cornerback Onis Konanbanny will sign with the Vols as Florida pushes to flip him.
Merritt is now Tennessee’s 24th commit or signee in its 2025 recruiting class. At the time of publication, Tennessee’s class ranks No. 10 nationally and No. 7 in the SEC according to the 247sports team rankings.
