Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella will miss the remainder of the 2024-2025 season as he prepares to undergo surgery on a lingering left foot injury.

The Vols’ sophomore big man began dealing with the injury over the summer as his offseason work was limited. Tennessee slowly ramped up Estrella’s preseason work as he played limited minutes in the Vols’ first three games but has sat out the last three games since.

Estrella announced his surgery on Monday morning and penned a letter to the Tennessee fanbase on social media:

“Vol Nation, I’m disappointed to share with all of you that, unfortunately, my 2024-2025 season is over. I’ll be getting surgery on my left foot. This has been a lingering injury and it’s important to get it addressed.

While I’m saddened that I won’t be able to compete the remainder of the season, I remain so excited to be a part of this program and will do everything I can to support my brothers as we continue to work towards our goals. I’m grateful for the support of my coaches, training staff, teammates, and family.

I’ll attack my rehab process and be back better than ever next season. In the meantime, I can’t wait to see all of you at Food City Center and share a whole bunch of W’s with you. Go Vols.”

More from RTI: Tennessee Basketball Forward J.P. Estrella Announces Season-Ending Surgery

Estrella played in 25 games during his freshman season last year but was projected to take a big step forward during his sophomore season. In his three games on the court with the Vols, Estrella averaged 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.3 minutes against Gardner-Webb, Louisville, and Montana.

Estrella did not play in Tennessee’s Nov. 17 game against Austin Peay and then sat out in both of the Vols’ Baha Mar Tournament games last week in the Bahamas.

The injury bug hasn’t been all too kind to Tennessee to start the season despite the Vols’ hot start. Tennessee center Felix Okpara has been dealing with a hip pointer while sophomore guard Cam Carr is set to miss approximately 4-6 weeks with a left thumb injury. Estrella, now, will be out for the season as he undergoes left foot surgery.
