Tennessee football didn’t play its best game but the Vols found a way to win against on Saturday night, knocking off Mississippi State 33-14 at Neyland Stadium.
The Vols’ offense started fast with their first opening drive touchdown since the Kent State game but still had a number of issues including in the red zone where they had a pair of scoreless trips in the first half.
However, the feel of the game completely changed coming out of halftime as Gaston Moore replaced an injured Nico Iamaleava. Tennessee used three scoring drives and one touchdown drive to fend off the Bulldogs and earn the win.
Tennessee’s defense did its thing against Mississippi State extending its streak of holding opponents to less than 20 points to 10 games dating back to last season. The Vols’ run defense had some issues but their pass defense and pass rush was stout, forcing two turnovers including a Boo Carter interception.
“Another SEC win. A good win,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said postgame. “Proud of the way the guys played for four quarters. Competed hard, played physical. … Defensively, just gave him a couple of runs, but all in all, great night. I think they were really good on third downs again.”
Following the game, RTI’s Ric Butler and Ryan Schumpert discussed Iamaleava’s injury, the offense’s big play ability and more. Check out the RTI Reaction video here.
