Tennessee football stayed put at No. 7 in this week’s AP Poll after its second open date of the 2024 season. The same six teams stayed ranked ahead of Tennessee with Miami jumping Texas while no one behind the Vols jumped them in the rankings. Josh Heupel’s fourth Tennessee tam did move up one spot to No. 7 in this week’s coaches poll.

The Vols are one of eight SEC teams in this week’s rankings coming in behind No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Texas and ahead of No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 14 Alabama, No. 16 LSU, No. 19 Ole Miss and No. 25 Missouri.

Tennessee has now spent seven of 10 weeks in the nation’s top 10. The Vols jumped in the top 10 following their win over NC State and fell out for one week after their overtime win over Florida. The Vols jumped right back in the top 10 following their win over Alabama a week later.

Heupel’s team remains in the thick of the College Football Playoff race ahead of a pivotal final five week of the regular season. The Vols have just one ranked opponent remaining on their schedule when they travel to Athens to face no. 2 Georgia in the three weeks.

But first Tennessee hosts reeling Kentucky at Neyland Stadium as well as a Mississippi State team that’s been one of the SEC’s worst to this point in the season. The Wildcats are currently 3-5 (1-5 SEC) and fell at home to Auburn over on Saturday.

Kickoff between the Vols and Wildcats is at 7:45 p.m. ET at Neyland Stadium next week. The SEC Network is broadcasting the game.
