Tennessee baseball was back at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Tuesday evening as they continued its fourth week of fall practice before heading west for exhibitions against Western Kentucky (Nashville) and Troy (Jackson) this weekend. The Vols held a six inning intrasquad scrimmages with eight different pitchers getting work in.
It’s important to note that this was not a super formal scrimmage. Pitchers are on pitch counts and each pitcher has designated innings to throw. There’s often pinch runners and the occasional random batter thrown in or random baserunner put on base to create some sort of situational effect. One half inning ended without three outs record because a random baserunner was put on base and was caught stealing.
Let’s start on the mound where Nate Snead got one inning of work before this weekend’s exhibitions. He worked a clean 1,2,3 inning without allowing a single baserunner. Dylan Loy also pitched just one inning and he got, got by a Lindsey Nelson Stadium special when a Andrew Fischer towering fly ball just cleared the right field wall.
RHP Stratton Scott pitched two clean innings while LHP Brayden Sharp looked solid in two scoreless innings. Kennesaw State RHP transfer Tanner Franklin was a bit wild, walking a pair of batters in his lone inning pitched but he also struck out a pair and didn’t allow a run.
RHP JJ Garcia had a nice day in what’s been an up-and-down fall so far. He struck out four in two scoreless innings of action. Tennessee also did a pair of one-on-one battles to end practice. Batter vs. Pitcher with no fielders. Garcia got a lazy fly ball from Alex Perry struck out Chris Newstrom.
At the plate, Cannon Peebles joined Andrew Fischer in hitting a home run. Both of those guys have had stellar falls to this point and have frequently gone deep. Peebles also worked a walk. After a disappointing first season in Knoxville, Peebles has had a great fall.
Freshman Jay Abernathy had a really nice day, totaling a pair of singles including a two-RBI single up the middle off of Tate Strickland. Abernathy has spent most of the fall in the outfield but he played at second base on Tuesday and made a fantastic defensive play there. He was a high school shortstop.
One final batter who had a nice day was Dean Curley who walked and hd a RBI double to left field.
With that, let’s get to the stats from the six innings of action.
