Fans of the Tennessee football team will tell you that Neyland Stadium is one-of-one when it comes to environment.

Whether it’s Checker Neyland, Dark Mode, an Orange Out, or just any other Saturday in Knoxville, Tennessee fans routinely pack the house to see the Volunteers play.

A former Oklahoma said the same thing on Tuesday.

Former Oklahoma offensive tackle Josiah St. John commented on Neyland Stadium’s atmosphere on Tuesday as he called it the “best environment” he ever played in.

High praise considering St. John appeared in 15 total games with the Sooners in 2014 and 2015.

St. John traveled to Neyland Stadium with Oklahoma during the 2015 season and made his first career start during that non-conference game on the road. Oklahoma ended up defeating Tennessee in double-overtime in a game that won’t be soon forgotten by Tennessee fans despite the result on the scoreboard.

That Tennessee-Oklahoma game in 2015 is famous for its noise.

That was also the game that resulted in Baker Mayfield’s “different type of loud” quote that has been used in Tennessee hype videos since. During an interview in 2016, Mayfield called Neyland Stadium “probably the best game experience” that he ever has had or will have.

“You can’t beat the Cotton Bowl. There’s nothing like that,” Mayfield said via Athlon Sports. “But last year when we went to play Tennessee in Neyland Stadium, that was probably the best game experience I’ve had and probably will ever have. That’s a different type of loud. I can’t even describe it. It was unbelievable.”

St. John’s quote also comes on the heels of a quick viral controversy coming out of the Tennessee-Alabama game on Saturday night in Knoxville. Alabama’s radio team suggested during the game that Tennessee uses piped-in crowd noise during the games, a claim that Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White emphatically denied on Monday.

No. 7 Tennessee has an open date this weekend but will return to Neyland Stadium the following weekend to host Kentucky in a night game from Knoxville.
